The artwork is inspired by my own experience in a salon as a child in South Africa. Seeing women sit with their salon capes on for hours and hours getting their hair done and seeing the joy they feel when they love the end product. Vaseline was never far away to protect the hairline for those who chose to relax their hair. A needle and thread that secured the hair and finished off my flat braids or got beads in my braids. I loved the hair combs that were broken but made the most straight lines. Sometimes the hair salon was outside in Joburg town or the warm sun under an umbrella in KZN. The hair salon became a home for my hair, a place to connect and even when I disliked the waiting, it was clear that I was just a girl and this was part of the black girl experience.
